DISCOVERING NEW DIGITAL BUSINESS MODEL TYPES â A STUDY OF TECHNOLOGY STARTUPS FROM THE MOBILITY SECTOR
In the 1990s, the broad diffusion of the internet allowed firms such as Amazon, eBay, and Google to invent new digital business models. Since then, research has formalized recurring configurations as digital business model types, still frequently being used to analyze existing business models and develop new ones. Now, the next wave of digital transformation â enabled by ongoing improvements in processing power, the miniaturization of hardware, and ubiquitous wireless connectivity â is again driving innovation. For instance, in the mobility sector, startups such as Uber, Turo, and Streetline have formed business logics that cannot be understood with existing types. Therefore, we identified and formalized new business model configurations by systematically analyzing a comprehensive data set of technology startups from the US mobility sector. We found that, in order to adequately account for the new digital logics, 14 digital business model types must be added to existing collections: app developer, autonomous products/robots manufacturer, data analytics provider, integrator of third-party services, IT-enabled self-service provider, IT-guided service provider, manufacturer of connected physical products, manufacturer of connectivity devices for physical products, mobilized service provider, P2P goods sharing platform, P2P information sharing community, P2P service provision platform, seller of sensor information, and sensor-enabled service innovator
Business Models for Internet of Things Platforms: Empirical Development of a Taxonomy and Archetypes
A wide range of Internet of Things platform providers operate diverse business models to cater for the manifold requirements of the IoT. This paper contributes to a more precise understanding of IoT platforms as an essential building block of the IoT based on the characteristics of its business models. Even though research listing technological dimensions according to which IoT platforms differ, they have neither been systematically derived nor been linked to the business model concept. In turn, they lack descriptive power on the heterogeneous value creation mechanisms of the platform providers. Within our research, we first analyzed 195 IoT platforms and systemically developed a taxonomy allowing the characterization of IoT platform business models. Second, based on this taxonomy, we identified nine archetypes of IoT platform business models and illustrated typical combinations of business model characteristics. Changes in Digital Business Model Types â A Longitudinal Study of Technology Startups from the Mobility Sector
Recent technological advances have enabled several new digital business models, which are now transforming industrial-age industries. As the mobility sector is particularly suitable for studying characteristics of this recent digital transformation, prior research has investigated how individual companies from this sector, such as automotive manufacturers, have transformed their business models in accordance with these changes. With our research, we extend this knowledge by conducting a longitudinal study of business models from an industry perspective, namely, that of the mobility sector. We analyzed the business model types employed by US technology startups founded in the past decade. Our results demonstrate that the share of intellectual landlords (e.g., software companies) has significantly decreased, whereas the shares of physical brokers (e.g., P2P car sharing) and contractors (e.g., limousine services) have significantly increased
DIGITAL MATURITY IN TRADITIONAL INDUSTRIES â AN EXPLORATORY ANALYSIS
The diffusion of new digital technologies renders digital transformation relevant for nearly every industry. Therefore, the maturity of firms in mastering this fundamental organizational change is increasingly discussed in practice-oriented literature. These studies, however, suffer from some short-comings. Most importantly, digital maturity is typically described along a linear scale, thus assuming that all firms do and need to proceed through the same path. We challenge this assumption and derive a more differentiated classification scheme based on a comprehensive literature review as well as an exploratory analysis of a survey on digital transformation amongst 327 managers. Based on these findings we propose two scales for describing a firmâs digital maturity: first, the impact that digital transformation has on a specific firm; second, the readiness of the firm to master the upcoming changes. We demonstrate the usefulness of this two scale measure by empirically deriving five digital maturity clusters as well as further empirical evidence. Our framework illuminates the monolithic block of digital maturity by allowing for a more differentiated firm-specific assessment â thus, it may serve as a first foundation for future research on digital maturity
A Taxonomy of Carsharing Business Models
Carsharing clubs that grant members temporary access to vehicles have existed for more than half a century. Only recently, however, have advances in digital technologies such as the mobile Internet begun to foster new carsharing business models, thereby increasing the attractiveness of carsharing for both operators and users. Thus far, these new business models have typically been classified as roundtrip, point-to-point, nonprofit/cooperative, or P2P carsharing. However, not all operators fit neatly into these rather broad groups. Moreover, significant differences exist among the business models of operators within the same group. Therefore, we complement these archetypes by developing a taxonomy of carsharing business models. This classification scheme translates the aforementioned technological advances into the creation of economic value and can be used for a more accurate analysis of existing operators as well as the systematic discovery of new business models
